I have been fascinated with anything to do with fossils since I was a small child. Some of my favorite memories are of my grandmother taking me out along the beach searching for fossilized shark's teeth. It wasn't until 1999 when I started hunting them full time. Shortly after I started Fossil Babe's Excursions. I created these guided tours because I have a passion for showing people a whole new world, one left for us millions of years ago.
With Florida's year round warm weather, a person can collect fossils just about anytime, anywhere. When I went house shopping, I made sure I found a home centralized for exploring my passion. I can walk out my door anytime and within minutes be on the hunt. I also have a wonderful job that lets me keep an eye out for new fossils, I am always searching through dirt mounds and always have a camera on me as to document each and every one of my finds.
I work 40, to sometimes 70 hours a week at my day job, but that doesn't stop me from getting my hands in the earth. It's not easy sometimes to find the time, but it is so worth it. When I am not at work, I am almost always at some of my favorite "honey holes" and other spots. It's more than a hobby to me, it's my passion!
The people I take on my excursions become just as fascinated with fossils as soon as they find their first specimen. It's something about finding a piece of natural history no other human has ever touched. It's amazing to think about the animal it belonged to, what kind of life it lived, so many years ago. It makes each and every find special in its own way. No two teeth are the same, some are worn from years in the sand, some are different colors, depending on what kind of minerals it absorb when it was going through the fossilization process. Most people think the fossils are all black, but they do come in a rainbow of colors.
I love finding shark teeth, my friends say I have a natural ability to spot them. I have actually found a megalodon tooth in the footsteps of other people (for some reason they did not spot it as they were walking, but it just jumped out at me). Some of my most valuable finds are my shark's teeth; for some reason I am just drawn to them.
Fossil Babe's Excursions is just one of the many way I like to share my knowledge. People young and old are welcome, trips are only $50.00 per person, with a $10.00 deposit. I teach you the safe, and practical-ethics of fossil hunting. Everyone who joins the hunt will not leave empty handed. Click here for more information on how you can join the hunt. I also teach classes using matrix to help people learn what they are looking for and to train their eye at spotting fossils in the dirt.
If you are interested in classes, or would like to charter a scuba excursion for fossil hunting, please email me at fossilbabe@comcast.net or call me at (941)628-3309 or toll free at (888) 889-7578. Please leave a message if I do not answer.
In my picture galleries, you will see many of my beautiful finds as well as some of my awesome people. My friends have come from around the world to Florida to fossil hunt with me. They are just as precious to me as the fossils we find together.
